Over the last few months we have been doing a lot of exploring around the whole of the Sierra Nevada range, concentrating on finding the very best singletrack descents. This is a brief account of what can be acheived in a weeks holiday with Sierra Enduro Tours on our point to point 'vuelta' or circuit of the Sierra.
This vuelta starts in Granada, our pickup point, an uplift up to 1600m provides the choice of 3 amazing trails down to Guejar Sierra 600m below.
The town of Guejar Sierra has a great feel and a strong link to the ski resort. We stay here for the night and ride more trails in this area the next day, perfect enduro style riding. It's a lovely place to be. We see Mulhacen and Veleta for the first time, the highest mountains in mainland Spain.
The next stage of this circle, this vuelta is Jerez Del Marquesado, Lanteira, and Ferreira. Overlooking the plains towards Guadix and hugged by the oak and pine woods of the Natural Park. The terrain here is a little softer, gradients stretched out, descents on mountain bikes.......lush.
Our accomodation high above Jerez del Marquesado, Refugio Postero Alto.
The next stop on this adventure...Laroles on the southern side of the Sierras, an area known as Las Alpujarras. On our way we cross over the pass at Puerto de la Ragua, taking in a couple of great descents as we go.
After a full days riding here we transfer to our final destination, the jewel in the crown, Bubion and the Poquiera valley, with Veleta and Mulhacen towering over us.
The opportunities here are so varied, from high altitude 'bivying' in the refuges towards Veleta, flowing singletrack descents through the oak woods lower down or epic rides to the coast for a post ride swim and beer !
